Spanish Cultural and Linguistic Toolkit Workshop
Class
About
This interactive training equips medical professionals with essential Spanish language skills and cultural insights to improve communication with Spanish-speaking patients. The session covers basic medical terminology, cultural considerations, and practical strategies for navigating real-world interactions. Activities include role-playing, scenario-based exercises, and engaging discussions to enhance participants' confidence in providing patient-centered care.
In today’s multicultural America, healthcare workers across the industry are encountering Spanish speaking patients on a daily basis. Medical professionals are increasingly left with the task of finding a way to communicate with patients who do not speak the same language. This workshop is designed to give medical professionals a baseline for effective communication with Spanish-speaking patients within a medical environment. Participants will gain knowledge about basic cultural norms shared by most Latin American countries in order to better understand why and how their patients respond to care. Students will also learn and practice basic Spanish words and phrases that will be useful for communication within a medical setting. This course is not meant to prepare healthcare workers to function as medical interpreters, but rather to provide them with useful tools to aid them in their encounters with Spanish-speaking patients
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
● Recognize and apply key Spanish phrases relevant to medical settings.
● Identify cultural factors that may impact patient-provider communication.
● Use effective strategies to navigate language barriers and improve patient interactions.
