Japanese for Youth Beginner 2 Online (Mon., 4:30-6pm CT)

* This class is for students aged 11-15. Students who are 16 and above can enroll in our regular group courses.

Instructor: Naoko Takeda

Objective: Learners in this class will build on skills developed during Beginner 1. Practice will focus on interacting with others using words and phrases on topics of personal interests such as school, friends and family members. Practice will focus on building conversational skills within the topics that are relevant to teenagers’ daily lives. The instructor will continue to guide learners in cultural exploration with activities designed help deepen the understanding of Japanese culture and compare to contrast it to their own.

* While we accept registrations up to week two, please enroll at least a week before the start date. This is when class confirmation/cancellation decisions are made, and your registration can make a difference.  

 

Can-Do Statements: Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:  

  • Ask how to say something in Japanese 

  • Make requests 

  • Ask someone when their birthday is 

  • Tell someone the time and the date 

  • Read and write hiragana and katakana 

  • Say their age, name of school, grade 

  • Introduce their family members (number of people, age, grade, job, nationality) 

  • Ask about someone else’s family (name, age, job) 

  • Introduce a friend (name, age, grade, school) 
     

Expectations/Time Commitment: The learners in this class are required to prepare, practice and review for the minimum of 2 hours each week outside of the class to develop their Japanese proficiency. Each week, assignments are given by the instructor through Matrix, the TLC’s learning management system.

- Functioning desktop or laptop; tablets are not recommended, and phones are not a good option 

- Access to a stable Internet connection

 - Webcam: we ask that you use your webcam in class as this helps to create a feeling of classroom community.

Digital literacies requirements 

- For both online and in-person classes, understanding of how to log in and navigate Matrix, our learning management system, to access resources (e.g., homework, eBook for Spanish, etc.); a Matrix Getting Started Guide is made available to students once the class is confirmed.  

- For online classes, several Zoom tutorials are available to learn basic skills (e.g., mute/unmute, turning camera on, use of chat, etc.): Zoom Tutorials

For IN-PERSON youth classes, we provide some copies of the textbook at TLC to borrow and use during class time for every student at no cost.  Students may not take home the textbooks. However, if possible, we recommend each student obtain a hard copy if possible, so that the students can review and reference when they study at home. Both new and used copies of Adventures in Japanese Volume 1, 4th edition is available to purchase in many online bookstores.  

 

For ONLINE youth classes, the instructor will share screenshots of the textbook during class time and place important pages online in a weekly module on the learning management system. However, if possible, we recommend each student obtain a hard copy of the textbook if possible, so that the students can review and reference when they study at home. Both new and used copies of Adventures in Japanese Volume 1, 4th edition is available to purchase in many online bookstores.
