** This class will be held at the Tennessee Language Center at 193 Polk Ave, Suite D, (2nd floor), Nashville, TN. Objective: This course is designed to support learners as they transition from the A2 (High) to B1 (Intermediate-Low) level of the JF Standard for Japanese Language Education. Building on previously acquired skills, learners will develop the ability to express personal experiences, thoughts, and emotions in more nuanced ways. Through conversations about topics such as hosting visitors, language learning, and life events like weddings, students will learn to navigate more complex social situations and respond to others' feelings. The course emphasizes pragmatic and discourse-level communication strategies such as reacting to unexpected situations, giving and receiving turns in conversation, and choosing appropriate expressions based on social context. In addition to strengthening listening and speaking skills, learners will improve their reading comprehension by engaging with authentic texts like emails, blogs, and articles that include both factual content and emotional expression. Learners will also expand their vocabulary and kanji recognition, supporting their transition to greater independence in Japanese.
Objective: This course continues from Japanese Independent Mid 2 and supports learners progressing within the B1 (Intermediate) level of the JF Standard for Japanese Language Education. The semester begins with a brief review of the final A2/B1 topic, followed by Marugoto Intermediate 1 (Topic 1). At the intermediate level, Can-Do objectives expand across five language activities: listening, conversation, extended speaking, reading, and writing. Students work toward greater independence by organizing ideas more clearly, speaking at greater length, and adjusting language according to context and relationships. At this stage, Japanese input becomes less controlled, and students may encounter unfamiliar vocabulary and expressions more frequently. Rather than understanding every detail, learners will develop the ability to identify key information, grasp main points, and continue communication even when some parts are unclear. Building resilience and a proactive attitude toward communication is an essential goal of this course.
