** This class will be held at Tennessee Language Center - 220 French Landing, Nashville, TN Instructor: Naoko Takeda Objective: Learners in this class will be introduced to a very basic repertoire of words and simple phrases related to personal details and concrete situations. Practice will focus on asking and answering questions within the topics of greetings/introductions, friends and family, and personal details (where one lives, etc.) and becoming familiar with Japanese sentence structure, word order and particles in basic statement/question sentences by listening to and engaging in simple dialogues. The instructor will share personal examples of Japanese culture and customs and guide learners in cultural exploration.

Practice will focus on interacting with others using words and phrases on the topics of personal interests/hobbies, leisure activities, making plans, and favorite foods. Learners will practice having conversations about future events, visiting people, and inviting someone to their home. The instructor will guide learners in cultural exploration of daily life in Japan, Japanese homes, manners when visiting someone at their home, Japanese holidays, and the varieties of local foods and cultures in different regions of Japan.
Instructor: Tomi Kawamura Objective: Learners on this course will further develop the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills they have developed in the previous courses. During this course, learners will focus on different aspects of life in Japan such as meeting new friends, eating out, and taking a trip. The instructor will continue to guide the learners in cultural exploration within those topics.
Instructor: Tomi Kawamura Objective: Learners in this class will build on skills developed during the Beginner 1-6 and Explorer 1-4 levels. Learners will gradually expand the number of things they are able to express while exploring new vocabulary and expanding their knowledge of kanji. The goal of this course is to help learners to improve their comprehension and production by exposure to the level-appropriate comprehensible input (e.g., stories and articles written in simple languages), also by varieties of speaking and writing activities.
** This class will be held at Tennessee Language Center - 220 French Landing, Nashville, TN Instructor: Naoko Takeda Objective: This course aims to help the learners review and further develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills learned in the previous courses (A1/A2), prepare for the next B1 level*. The practices of this course focus on communicative language activities and the structural elements of language (grammar and sentence patterns) that support communication. The learners will practice speaking and listening with dialogues set in real-life situations, express their opinions and describe their experiences and past events within given topics such as sports and games, and looking for a house.
** This class will be held at Tennessee Language Center - 220 French Landing, Nashville, TN Instructor: Tomi Kawamura Objective: In this class, we will build on basic handwriting skills acquired in Beginner 1. Practice will focus on accurate writing of hiragana, katakana, and N5 kanji, as well as techniques for Japanese pen and brush writing, kaisho script(楷書), and knowledge of Japanese culture and customs. Learners will improve their knowledge and skills in Japanese writing and gain confidence in handwriting as they learn pen and brush skills. Learners who take this course over several semesters or who already have some previous experience will learn gyosho script(semi-cursive style, 行書) as a developmental study, based on their level of skill.
