Objective: Learners in this class will build on skills developed during Beginner 1 and 2 with a focus on the Arabic alphabet and sound systems (Modern Standard Arabic) and continued conversation practice at the novice low proficiency level. Each unit covered in this course addresses all four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking (including colloquial Arabic). Activities will provide more open-ended practice to enable learners to push themselves in speaking and writing and to comprehend texts slightly beyond their current proficiency level in reading and listening. The instructor will also guide the learners to explore Arabic culture featuring a wide variety of regional traditions and dialects.

Can-Do Statements: Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

Demonstrate understanding of spoken dialect in reference to people, places, and things. For example, physical and emotional descriptions of people.

Follow simple spoken commands/instructions.

Ask and answer questions about family, work, and leisure.

Recognize intonation used to achieve various communicative purposes such as asking/answering questions, indicating surprise and giving commands.

Talk about major events that occur at different times in the year

Use numbers for concrete tasks such as filling out forms.

Book a hotel, arrange transportation, and ask for directions using appropriate vocabulary.

Talk about the different seasons and months of the year and how they differ

Use singular, dual, and plural with nouns, adjectives and verbs when referring to things or people

Describe people’s professions (feminine/masculine) in more detail using adjectives

Further develop their pronunciation of short vowels and ability to write them with their corresponding diacritics: fatha, kasra, damma, shadda, sukuun

Further develop their use of singular, dual, and plural with nouns, adjectives and verbs when referring to things or people and possessive pronouns (my, your, his, her, our, their) to indicate ownership of something
Use of the Language: This course has been designed in such a way that most of the class time will be devoted to communication and will be taught in the target language (i.e., the language that you are studying). As you already have some experience with the language, you are encouraged to use the target language as much as possible from Day 1. You are not expected to understand everything, and you can expect to be pushed beyond your comfort zone. However, your instructor is there to make sure you can succeed in meeting the goals of the activities and of the class in general. Our goal is for you to be able to communicate in the target language, and we cannot learn to speak a language without speaking it. Please remember that we learn best by making mistakes, and we encourage you to try to do your best. Don’t forget that your instructor is there to support you in class and is also available via the Matrix messaging system for assistance.

Expectations/Time Commitment: It is strongly recommended that learners schedule about 1 hour per week outside of the weekly 2-hour class for engaging with this course. Background knowledge/experience with the language and other variables may require them to spend additional time. Learners should plan accordingly by scheduling time on their calendars now. Active engagement in all course activities (e.g., class participation, module completion and participation, homework, written assignments, studying vocabulary, etc.) will contribute to learning and success in this course.
