** This class will be held at 193 Polk Ave, Suite D, (2nd floor), Nashville, TN. Instructor: Lindsay Smith Objective: Learners in this class gain a solid foundation in the basics of Russian through study of the Cyrillic alphabet and basic sounds of the Russian language. They will be slowly introduced to the alphabet, going over the shape and sound of letters one by one and learning them in the context of vocabulary words. Practice will focus on making simple statements and asking yes/no questions within the topics of greetings/introductions and personal information (e.g., nationality, address, phone number, etc.). Learners will also be introduced to Russian culture and customs through multimedia and cultural interactions.
Instructor: Lindsay Smith Objective: In this class, students will embark on Unit 2, Education. They will practice speaking in longer “bursts,” elaborating on statements, and asking follow-up questions: having real conversations. They will review and expand knowledge of accusative case (nouns, adjectives, personal pronouns). Students have long known to say моего папу зовут or моего брата зовут but they will finally understand why: masculine animate nouns. They will read about polyglots and discuss opinions on and strategies for language learning. They will learn several ways to say “study,” “learn,” and “teach”: учиться-научиться, учить-выучить, изучать-изучить. They will discuss their goals for language learning. They will review modifiers to make their language more specific: each/any/all/another (каждый/любой/весь/другой). Finally, they will learn some idioms related to the tongue! As time permits, students may begin Unit 2.2 and discover the Russian educational system, which is quite different from the American K-12 system but may resemble other European countries students are familiar with.
