About

This course is ideal for you if you are a doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional seeking to better serve your patients through the acquisition of basic Spanish and cultural competency skills. You will gain the necessary linguistic and cultural knowledge to engage in basic medical conversations with your Spanish-speaking patients. This course assumes no prior knowledge of or exposure to Spanish. Health care workers who have been raised in Spanish-speaking households can benefit from this course to consolidate what they learned at home and to learn specific medical vocabulary.

Spanish for Medical Personnel is an online two-semester, instructor-led beginner course that provides students with the tools to begin cultivating their cultural competence with regards to Hispanic/Latino/a/x healthcare issues and working to develop a working linguistic proficiency in Spanish at the ACTFL novice low-mid level. Although this is not a substitute for the proper use of qualified interpreters, it is an important component of a multi-level response to the requirement that services be provided in the patient’s preferred language. Doctors, nurses, and other health care providers have expressed the desire to acquire Spanish to help them to better collaborate with their patients. There is an optional second part to the course that will be offered in the semester immediately following part one for those who are interested in furthering their skills and professional development.
