Class
About
This course is ideal for you if you are a doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional seeking to better serve your patients through the acquisition of basic Spanish and cultural competency skills. You will gain the necessary linguistic and cultural knowledge to engage in basic medical conversations with your Spanish-speaking patients. This course assumes no prior knowledge of or exposure to Spanish. Health care workers who have been raised in Spanish-speaking households can benefit from this course to consolidate what they learned at home and to learn specific medical vocabulary.
Spanish for Medical Personnel is a 15-week, instructor-led introductory course designed to help participants develop basic Spanish language skills and a practical understanding of cultural factors relevant to Spanish-speaking patients in healthcare settings. The course targets ACTFL Novice Low–Mid proficiency and consists of 37.5 instructional hours. The program is intended for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who need foundational Spanish skills to support patient communication and improve day-to-day clinical interactions. It focuses on common medical situations, essential vocabulary, and communication strategies appropriate for clinical environments.
This course is not a substitute for the use of qualified medical interpreters. Rather, it supports a broader language-access strategy by helping healthcare professionals communicate more effectively with Spanish-speaking patients and work more efficiently alongside professional interpreters. It is well suited for clinicians who wish to build basic Spanish proficiency to enhance patient engagement and care delivery.
