Pre-requisite: This class is for anyone ages 16 and above who are interested in learning kanji/Chinese characters in order to blush up their Japanese language skills or just want to learn for fun! No previous knowledge of kanji is necessary - for anyone who has mastered their hiragana and katakana, but not sure where to start, or who is curious and wants to learn more about the Japanese language and culture, this is a perfect place to start. Welcome to the fascinating world of kanji!
The goal of the Kanji Club is to learn and review kanji in an interactive, fun, and effective learning environment. Kanji is the third set of scripts in the Japanese writing system after mastering hiragana and katakana.
The learner/club members will be able to broaden their knowledge of Japanese language by learning the common daily expressions with kanji. In addition, they will be guided by the instructors to understand the traditional Japanese culture, its values, and esthetics in depth. The learners/club members are encouraged to learn to write kanji correctly and beautifully as a form of their self-expressions in a friendly, confidence-building classroom.
Can-Do Statements: Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
· Understand the meanings of 45 kanji related to: Numbers, Calendars, People, Nature, and Places at the N5 level.
· Learn the origins of kanji.
· Properly understand the on-yomi and kun-yomi readings, as well as okurigana.
· Write kanji with correct stroke order and forms.
Class Expectations: Learners should plan to practice an hour or more each week.
