About

As professional interpreters and translators, we are often afforded many training opportunities surrounding new and emerging best practices as they specifically pertain to the art of interpretation and translation. But what about other relevant skills of equal importance such as the art of correctly filing taxes? While there are tax professionals available to assist us, part of being a professional interpreter and translator is also being competent in these areas that are often not as well understood as they should be. After all, our job does not end the moment we exit the triadic encounter or submit a completed translation. Rather, just as we continually participate in research and professional development in between encounters, we should also become proficient in best practices come tax time. Common questions like “What is self-employment tax?” and “Can I deduct the cost of my certification exams or the cost of my home office” frequent the minds of interpreters and translators throughout the year. Therefore, it can be helpful to understand tax basics so that we may be well-rounded language access professionals with a solid understanding upon which we may make our financial choices.
